Description

The memorial is situated at the eastern end of The Green, and has an enclosed area around it. It has a stepped base, square plinth with inscriptions and a tapering shaft with a Celtic cross head. The south face of the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE ME OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FO. KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918" and four names underneath. The east and west sides have the names of further fallen soldiers. The north fac has a dedication to those who fought and died in the Second World War: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS./ 1939 - 1945" with three names underneath. The memorial was first unveilied 1st May 1920 by Lt-Col Sir Percy Wilkinson, and was made by William Cresswell of Hexham.

In the background is Blackett House,a two storey, four bay house with two bay section on the left and gabled cross wing on the right, with Temperance Cottage attached on the right. The house has a door in the right bay of the left section under a stone porch with gabled barge boards, and in the centre of the cross wing is a canted ground floor window. In the gable is a large painted Blackett family crest. Temperance Cottage has a single storey with gabled dormer and one bay, with the entrance on the left. The house was formerly an inn and then a temperance hotel.
