Description

The print is from a file entitled 'Planning Development (changes involved) 1958-1959', in the archive collection of the Central Office of Information.

Foulness Island was put forward in the 1960s as a possible location for London's third airport, an alternative to the Stansted site. The island was at the time part of the Proof and Experimental Establishment of the Ministry of Defence, who were reluctant to relinquish the site due to the projected cost of the removal of the Establishment.
