Description

This is one of a number of identical iron lamp stands situated along the riverside on Victoria Embankment. They were erected in 1870, and are by Timothy Butler. The Victoria Embankment was constructed in 1864-1870 to a design by Sir Joseph Bazalgette, as part of his scheme for a new sewage system for London. The image shows no contextual location, so it is possible that it was taken before the lamp stand was installed on the Embankment.
