Description

In 1954 the St George’s Hospital Group based at Lanesborough House, Hyde Park Corner, took over the former Grove Fever Hospital, which occupied the Tooting site since the 1890s. In 1973 construction began on the modern hospital and medical school to replace the Victorian buildings, and St George’s transferred there from its original location in 1980. Laing began construction on the £16.9m Phase 2A extension in June 1984 and it was completed in late 1988. The development included a ward block of 376 beds, Accident & Emergency, Out-Patients and Radiography Departments, operating theatres and a chapel.

Gaps left in the brickwork skin of the existing building, exposing the internal blockwork, show where the new block will abut it and where internal links will potentially be made between the two.
