The most serious accident at the factory occured on the 23rd June 1931 the contents of a nitroglycerin preparation chamber exploded, killing 10 and injuring 19. Buildings were destroyed and a storage tank containing sulphuric acid was ruptured. The explosion was heard 20 miles away and buildings up to a mile away suffered extensive damage.
