The airfield at Sealand, Flintshire, was originally civilian, and was requisitioned by the military in 1916 and subsequently expanded. A railway separated RAF Sealand on the south side and RAF Shotwick on the north side of the site. In 1924 the two bases merged to become RAF Sealand. The base operated as a Packing Depot for aircraft to be sent overseas. In 1935 the site expanded to include an Aircraft Storage Unit. Between 1951 and 1957 the base was operated by the United States Air Force; after its return to the RAF it became a communications support base. The base was entirely closed in 2006; the site was partially reused by MoD Sealand, and some was sold to private investors.
