A chantry was established at the site of Guy's Cliffe House in 1423, following from a legend that 'Guy', Earl of Warwick, lived as a hermit there in a cave near the River Avon. Between 1748 and 1758 Samuel Greatheed began the development of the current house. Following the Second World War, the estate was broken up and sold. The house fell into disrepair and suffered fire damage in 1996-97.
