- Collection containing Photographic and Miscellaneous material
The collection comprises 76 photographic lantern slides which were taken or collected by Cecil Victor Shadbolt between 1882 and 1892. The images mostly show South London and are the first known aerial views of the city. Some appear to relate to Shadbolt's balloon flight of 1882 taking off from Alexandra Palace in the hot-air balloon 'Reliant'. Additionally, the collection includes: images of the Eiffel Tower in Paris taken from a balloon; portraits of Shadbolt and a camera on a balloon basket; and fanciful colour engravings depicting the history of ballooning.
