The collection comprises 225 black and white photographic prints mainly depicting various views of buildings and countryside in Great Britain. The photographs were taken between about 1870 and 1914 by a variety of photographers including Carl Norman, Francis Bedford, Francis Frith, James Valentine and George Washington Wilson. Some of the photographs are duplicates and some show locations overseas. There appears to be no particular connection between these images and they may have been artificially collated immediately prior to acquisition. There is a good set of images of Exeter Cathedral and images of other cathedrals. Of particular note are images of: Deal Castle prior to the removal of a Georgian crenellated house; carved pediment at Barley Wood near Bath; group around tree named 'Major Oak' in Sherwood Forest; Escott House, Devon; the Crown Inn, Rochester; people with boat and coracle at Ross on Wye; Belle Isle House, Windermere; unusual view of an unidentified gatehouse; Whitby viewed at a distance from Larpool; and a regatta scene, possibly on the Norfolk Broads.
The collection was acquired by the Historic England Archive in 2015.
