2: London Trocadero

Early 1900s to at least 1930s

On the corner of Shaftesbury Avenue and Great Windmill Street, in what is now Picturehouse Central.

The Trocadero Long Bar ran the entire length of the room and was male only, with a mixed clientele of prim civil servants with starched collars, pin-striped suits and bowler hats, and more exotically dressed homosexuals.

Some of those who frequented the Long Bar fell into both camps, which was why it was here that a new song was premiered in 1932 - “Make Way, Boys – Here Comes a Sailor”.
